In Gavi
When you leave the Alessandria plain to follow the road to Gavi,
you can feel the call of the hills, as the road begins to wind
its way up, seesawing tirelessly among the ridges.
This is the valley of the Lemme, a stream about 30km long ending
in Basaluzzo and flowing into the Orba, opening out into the
Po Valley.
An ancient fort overlooks the town of Gavi and the surrounding
vineyards. Its imposing, square, powerful walls contrast with
the softness and quiet of the surrounding landscape. It was
built by the Genovese Republic in 1628, as a military post along
one of the busiest roads in north-western Italy.
The church of S. Giacomo is equally attractive. This beautiful
grey stone church was built in 1150 over a pre-existent Carolingian
structure, and is situated among the oldest buildings in the
town. The original façade and elegant portal are still
intact.
The four letters forming the name of this beautiful place also
call to mind a fresh, stylish wine, light straw yellow in colour,
with a delicate well-sustained bouquet of new-mown hay and cherry
blossom. This is Gavi, born and aged in this generous land,
until all its best qualities find their fullest expression –
here in Gavi, where we love to meet and rediscover it every
year. |
