2004 harvest
2004 promises to be a great year for Italian wines. According
to data from Assoenologi, there has been a 20% increase compared
to last year with a total production of about 53 million hectolitres.
The favourable weather conditions – cold winter and mild
spring with a good balance of rain and sunshine – enabled
the grapes to ripen well with good colour and accumulation of
sugars and aromas.
The harvest in our vineyards took place a little later than
usual (24 days later than the 2003 harvest) but this was a deliberate
decision, in order to obtain a good ratio of acidity to sugar.
We monitored the development of the grapes closely: on the first
of September we began taking samples to check ripening.

Tests showed interesting data from the very beginning:
similar sugar concentration to 2001, higher than 2002,
with a good content of acidity.
The 2004 sampling included research into malic and lactic
acids, providing important information about the development
of acidity.
The harvest began around 27th September, later than any
of us can remember, but this delay was rewarded with the
levels of sugar and interesting aromas.
This was undoubtedly a very satisfactory harvest with
excellent quality of grapes and an increase in quantity
compared to the previous year.
We are now working carefully in the winery to make sure
our Cortese grapes bring to life an exceptional Gavi 2004
rich in aromas and enjoyable on the palate. |
